Gang rape in Mamata's constituency

In the third incident of the year, a middle-aged woman was allegedly gang raped at Chetla in South Kolkata falling under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Assembly constituency. 

“The victim who works as an attendant was returning home when she was forcibly picked up near Chetla bridge in South Kolkata by nearly ten men in a vehicle and was then gang raped by at least two persons,” Deputy Commissioner (South) D P Singh told Deccan Herald.

The incident took place on Saturday evening when the 30-year-old woman - a divorcee who stays with parents and her only daughter - was returning to her Tollygunj home. The women said in her complaint that a vehicle stopped near her and two men came out and sought her service as a medical attendant. When she refused, at least ten people came out of the vehicle, tied her mouth and eyes and took her to an apartment where at least two of them raped her. On Sunday morning, she was dumped at the same spot from where she was picked, she alleged.

“The woman lodged an FIR on Sunday and a medical test of the woman has been conducted, the report of which is awaited. One person has been detained for interrogation but we are yet to make any arrest. We are investigating the matter,” Singh added. However, according to the police the people who raped her used condom. It would be bit difficult to get a perfect report in the medical test, they said.

“The nature of the crime suggests that it was carefully planned and the entire operation was carried out after lots of observation and meticulous planning. The entire incident suggests that the culprits are known to the lady and so they blindfolded her eyes,” a senior police officer in charge of the investigation said.

A series of incidents of rape have been reported from the city recently. This also includes the Park Street case in which an Anglo-Indian woman was raped in a moving car by a group of five young men last February. Four months after the infamous case, another housewife was raped in a moving car in the city.
