Srinivasaiah unveils mindset of todays youth; urges teachers to teach about Gandhiji
Last Updated 25 August 2012, 17:56 IST

Chairman of Gandhi Smaraka Nidhi, Bangalore, H Srinivasaiah on Saturday ridiculed the knowledge of younger generation who are unaware of Mahatma Gandhiji.

Addressing the gathering after dedicating Mahatma Gandhi Park and water tank at Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) campus, the Gandhian said; such is the mindset of youth that they know about Pooja Gandhi (referring to Kannada film actress), not Mahatma Gandhi.

In Bangalore, if anybody especially youth are questioned about Mahatma Gandhi, it’s the same again as they will mention Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and other Gandhis.

However, Srinivasaiah blamed the teachers for not spreading Gandhian thoughts and principles, even though the students still have interest to learn about ‘Father of the nation.’

In the wake of increasing incidents like that of suicide and murder where younger generation is the victim, practicing Gandhian way of life is significant. It can be possible only when the teachers take the initiative of inculcating the teachings of the great personality like Gandhiji. If understood, the very thoughts will help derive inspiration of truth and non-violence.

In an attempt to rekindle the interest on Gandhiji among Indians, that is unfortunately on wane, the Gandhian cited the examples of Martin Luther King and incumbent president of USA Barack Obama. Both the leaders were inspired by Gandhi.

Vice-chancellor of University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), K Narayan Gowda appealed to the farmers to unite and fight against the decontrolled market and also the menace of middlemen. Lamenting on the shrinking lands for cultivation, the V-C said the per capita land holding was three hectares six decades ago against less than one hectare in the present days. The future too holds no good with land holding receding to less than half hectare.

Suttur seer Sri Shivaratri Deshikendra Swamiji, V-C of KSOU Prof K S Rangappa, deputy advisor (in-charge) to National Service Scheme (NSS), regional centre, Bangalore Khadri Narasimhaiah and registrar Prof B S Vishwanath were present.
