Yuva Puraskar for Vikram Sampath

City-based author Vikram Sampath has won the first Yuva Puraskar of the Sahitya Akademi in English literature category for his work ‘My name is Gauhar Jaan! - the life and times of a musician’.

The prestigious award was conferred on him on August 25 at Jayadev Bhavan, Bhubaneshwar. The author received the award from Sunil Gangopadhya, president of the Akademi.

The book, in Vikram’s words, paints the evocative picture of yesteryears gramophone celebrity and empress of Indian classical music, Gauhar Jaan of Calcutta. The book had also won the prestigious ‘Association of Recorded Sound Companies’ award in 2011. Vikram has also authored books like ‘Splendours of Royal Mysore - the untold story of the Wodeyars’ and ‘Voice of the Veena: S Balachander, a biography’.
