Titus Bramble headed Wigan in front before Didier Drogba equalised just after half-time but Cech was shown a red card for bringing down Hugo Rodallega and the Colombian fired his penalty past Cech's replacement Hilario. Paul Scharner scored Wigan's third goal in stoppage time.

Chelsea, who had won their first six league games of the season, slipped below Manchester United on goals scored after the champions won 2-0 at Stoke City.
There were big wins for Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur who occupy third and fourth spots. Fernando Torres hit a hat-trick for Liverpool in a 6-1 thrashing of Hull City and Robbie Keane scored a hat-trick for Spurs in a 5-0 defeat of Burnley.
Aston Villa lost 2-1 at Blackburn Rovers while Portsmouth are still pointless at the bottom of the table after losing 1-0 at home to Everton.

Louis Saha condemned Portsmouth to a seventh defeat from seven Premier League games this season when his goal earned Everton a 1-0 victory at Fratton Park on Saturday.

Portsmouth matched Everton and deserved something for their efforts but they remain pointless and bottom of the table after squandering several chances to equalise Saha's well-taken goal just before the break.

The struggling south coast club threw everything at Everton in the closing stages with Hassan Yebda having a powerful header cleared off the line as the visitors hung on for their first points on the road this season.

Meanwhile, holders Manchester United will face Championship (second division) Barnsley away in the last 16 of the English League Cup.

Saturday's draw also paired Liverpool with Arsenal at the Emirates while Tottenham Hotspur, winners in 2007-08 and runners-up last season, host Everton. Premier League leaders Chelsea are at home to Bolton Wanderers.

Scunthorpe United, one of only three non-Premier League teams still involved, travel to Manchester City while Peterborough, also of the Championship, are away at Blackburn Rovers. Ties will be played in the week commencing Oct 26.
