Cattle in Gollahalli feed on farmers' crops

Barbed fences too prove ineffective against the night raiders, say farmers

The farmers of region are at the receiving end as cattle from the surrounding areas have been straying into a few layouts of the town and have been feeding on their crops bringing them huge losses.

The cowherds let the cattle out during the night who turn ragi, paddy and several other crops into their fodder.

“More than twenty cattle heads barged into my field and grazed on paddy crops cultivated on one and a half acre of land,” Rajendra, a farmer from Gollahalli said.

Another farmer  Sampath Kumar complained that most cattle come from Kolar Gold Fields and it is not practical to get hold of these cattle during night.

“We already have to cope with the problem of stray pigs. We have even fenced our yards but to no avail,” farmer Madirappa said.

There have been instances when the cowherds from Chamarajapet of Kolar Gold Fields, Sosaipalya, Maskam, M Block and Andersonpete have attacked the farmers when they attempted to tie the cattle to avoid hazards, they complained.

The recent rains have brought in hope of some good yield to farmers only to be trashed by these cattle, another farmer Ravi poured out his woes.

Venkatesh, a landowner said they have to work round the clock, right from working in the field in the morning to keeping a vigil on them at night.

Earlier, the farmers had staged a protest following which the police intervened to control the cattle.  But the problem resumed after some time. A complaint has been registered in this regard at the Andersonpete Police station, Nagaraj, member of Bhuvaneshwari Kannada Sangha said.
