MK seeks citizenship for Lankan refugees


 "We will adopt legal and peaceful means to press the Centre to let the Sri Lankan Tamils who have taken refuge in Tamil Nadu for the past 20 years, to stay here permanently and rehabilitate them," Karunanidhi declared.

He was winding up a huge rally in Kancheepuram. Earlier at the rally, a resolution to this effect was moved by the Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin.

Meanwhile 40-odd fishermen from Nagapattinam were humiliated by the Sri Lankan Navy personnel in mid-sea. Many complained that they had even been "humiliated to the point of being stripped."

The DMK “Mupperum Vizha,” adopted another resolution urging the Centre to retrieve the island of  “Katchatheevu,” ceded to Sri Lanka in 1974, back to India to protect the dignity and livelihood interests of Tamil Nadu fishermen.
