JOIN USHigh jumper Chethan B stole the show on the opening day of the 48th Bangalore University Inter-Collegiate Athletics Championships at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium here on Wednesday.
The 20-year-old first B Com student from Government First Grade College (GFGC), KR Puram, set the lone record of the day, scaling a height of 2.03 metres. The previous record of 1.90M was jointly held by PV Somaiah of BMCE in 1979 and Anil TV of Al-Ameen College in 2003.
Chethan, currently under the training of noted coach GV Gaonkar and initially coached by N R Ramesh of Youngsters Sports Club, was not satisfied with his effort. “I am still getting he used to my new technique. I am capable of much better jumps,” said Chethan who has a best of 2.12 metres.
Tanuj Batavia of St Joseph’s College of Commerce (SJCC) won the men’s 100M dash with a personal best time of 10.9 seconds. The 19-year-old said the victory tasted sweeter as he had been plagued by injuries for the past one year.
Rebecca Jose of Surana College emerged as the fastest woman, clocking 12.4 seconds. The 20-year-old BCom final year student made a triumphant return to competitive action after a break of eight months forced by a back injury.
