'In-laws tortured her for gifts'

A 28-year-old woman hanged herself at her house in Dwarka in south-west Delhi, police said on Sunday.

Her family members alleged that her in-laws killed her for dowry. Divya, who was married to Devender in May 2011, hung herself to death at her house in Rudra Apartments in Dwarka Sector 6 on Saturday evening.

“We got a call that a woman has hung herself. We reached the spot and found her dead on her bed. Divya was rushed to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital in Hari Nagar, where doctors pronounced her dead,” said a police officer.

Teacher couple

The victim taught at a government school in west Delhi’s Janakpuri. Her husband also works in a government school in Dwarka as a teacher. Police have sent the body for post-mortem. The victim’s brother alleged that since they could not fulfil the in-laws’ demand for dowry, they killed her.

“She was being tortured for more gifts after only 15 days of her marriage,” said the victim’s cousin Vijay. He said Divya was also beaten.

Her husband and in-laws refuted the allegations. Police said a sub-divisional magistrate level inquiry has been initiated and they are probing the matter.

“We did not find any suicide note from the spot and we are questioning the victim’s husband and in-laws. If found guilty of the crime they will be arrested,” said the officer.
