Last Updated 20 September 2012, 19:50 IST

A notorious thief, who was out on bail, was hacked to death by a gang of four men in Kurubarahalli on Thursday evening.

Manikantha, 28, a resident of Manjunath Nagar, is the dead. He had cases of burglary, robbery and dacoity in Basaveshwara Nagar, Ulsoor, Ulsoorgate, Nandini Layout, Rajaji Nagar and Subramanya Nagar police stations pending against him. He was arrested by Central Crime Branch in January 2012 and was released on bail on August 23.

A gang of four men who came in two bikes attacked Manikantha with lethal weapons as he was walking in Kurubarahalli on Thursday evening.

The gang chased him as he tried to escape and hacked him to death in front of the Bescom office.

The gang soon fled the scene as Manikantha collapsed in a pool of blood.  Manikantha's mother Valliyamma has lodged a complaint with the Mahalakshmi Layout police and a murder case has been registered. Manikantha hailed from Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu and was working here as carpenter.

Police sources say that Manikantha had a tiff with some of his friends on Wednesday during the Ganesh idol procession that they had installed in Kurubarahalli. Police suspect that this might have led to his murder.
