Platform ticket sales resume

Last Updated 30 September 2009, 19:16 IST

Despite initial resistance from passengers, the temporary stoppage did help in reducing passenger congestion at platforms and improvement of general safety of the station during the hectic festival season.

Since the Division feels the overall impact has been positive, it has taken a decision to temporarily stop the issual of platform tickets during busy occasions throughout the year.
“We may even stop the issual of platform tickets during the Dasara period every year. It is being considered seriously,” said Divisional Railway Manager, Akhil Agrawal.
An average of 10,000 to 11,000 tickets are issued everyday during the Dasara festival. The stoppage of this has resulted in reducing the revenue earnings of the Bangalore Division by over Rs three lakh.

“This is a negligible amount when compared to the improvement that it resulted in,” the DRM said.

There was some relaxation provided in the case of those accompanying the elderly or single women and hence between 500 and 1,000 platform tickets were issued even during Dasara, he added.
