BITS Pilani and VIT University have refused to participate in the joint entrance examination to be conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education and the joint admission board of the IITs for admission to technical institutions in 2013.

At a meeting of the deemed universities offering engineering programmes here on Friday, “the institutes expressed reliance on the entrance test conduct by them for admission to engineering programs,” official sources in the Human Resource Development Ministry said.

Karnataka’s KLE Academy of Higher Education and Research was still not sure of its participation in the joint entrance test, to be conducted in two parts, JEE-Main and JEE-Advance, on April 7 and June 2 next year respectively.

“They said, they will reconsider the ministry’s proposal (for participation in the JEE) and inform,” a ministry official said.

Out of the 65 deemed universities which offer technical courses, 60 have agreed to admit students on the basis of their ranking in the JEE-Main. “Some of them have agreed to give 40-60 per cent weightage to class XII board marks while others are ready to give 100 per cent weightage,” he said.

The CBSE and the joint admission board will conduct the JEE-Main in Singapore, Colombo and some other countries in the Gulf.

While the governments of Gujarat, Haryana and Uttarakhand have agreed to use the test scores for admission to engineering colleges under their jurisdiction, Maharashtra, Odisha and Goa have consented to come on board from 2014.
“It’s a monumental shift. Our hard work has started paying off. We will continue to motivate others (to come on board),” HRD Minister Kapil Sibal said.

Simpler means

* JEE is conducted by CBSE and joint admission board of IITs for engineering course.
* Out of the 65 deemed universities which offer technical courses, 60 have agreed to admit students on the basis of their ranking in the JEE-Main.
