A 22-year-old man, charged with abducting a minor with an intention to compel her to marry him, has been sentenced to four years imprisonment by a Delhi court. The court said he had “cunningly” turned the girl against her parents to lure her away.

Additional sessions judge Virender Bhat also imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on UP native Ajay on a complaint filed by the father of the 14-year-old girl. “The convict kidnapped a 14-year-old girl by extending lures and enticements to her. He acted so cunningly that he even told the girl that her mother was a bad woman, and she should shun her studies and instead accompany him to live a happy life,” the court said.

The prosecution said that on March 18 last year, the girl’s father Om Prakash had filed a complaint with police that her elder daughter had gone missing. Police rescued her from Ajay’s house in Etawa on March 21 last year. He was then arrested.

During trial, the girl told the court that she had fallen unconscious after consuming snacks
given by Ajay. She said that on regaining consciousness, she found herself in the accused’s house in UP, where Ajay and his parents threatened to kill her if she did not marry him.

The court, however, rejected her submission and considered her statement given to a magistrate under the provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code. In her statement to the magistrate, she had said that she used to meet the accused on her way to a coaching centre and had become friendly with him.

It said the accused had made false representations to the girl that he was earning Rs 500 to 600 per day, due to which she agreed to accompany him.
