HC allows multiple trips for garbage trucks

Here is some hope for speedy clearance of garbage heaps in the City. The High Court on Tuesday directed the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to allow the garbage contractors lift the solid waste being collected in city, by making multiple trips in the trucks notified under different tender packages.

With this direction, the court has relaxed the BBMP norm of one trip per vehicle per day to lift garbage from the City and dispose it at the landfills under the tender package.
Hearing a batch of petitions filed by the garbage contractors challenging the new tender notification issued by the BBMP for collection and transport of municipal waste in segregated form, the Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Vikramajit Sen and Justice B V Nagarathna, said vehicles notified per package may be allowed to lift the garbage in multiple trips within 24 hour rotation.

Norm relaxation

The Court said the relaxation of the norm was in the public interest so that garbage clearance became faster and the garbage contractors should ensure adequate staff to carry out the exercise.

“The direction follows the submission by the petitioner that if multiple trips are permitted, no garbage will be left in the City,” the Court said.

The direction came after the counsel for the contractors, Lakshminarayana, pleaded that if they get relaxation from one trip per vehicle per package to dispose solid waste, they can clear the City’s garbage within 48 hours and there won’t be delays in disposing garbage at landfills.

Presently, the restriction of single trip per package and restricted timings for garbage disposal between 10 pm and 6 am is resulting in delays in transporting garbage to dumping yards located on the outskirts of the City.
