It was C M Poonaccha from Kodagu who had won the constituency in 1967. Though JD(S) tried to give ticket to local candidate and worked for their victory in the constituency, it could not succeed after Poonaccha. Even this time, local representation and personal image did not help JD(S) candidate B A Jeevijaya’s victory.

Though BJP candidate C H Vijayashankar has lost the elections, the number of votes polled by him in Kodagu shows that the district is still BJP’s forte. This clearly shows that two MLAs from the district have worked honestly. In the last Assembly elections, BJP received 1,09,689 votes from both constituencies.

In the Lok Sabha elections, C H Vijayashanar received 1,10,297 votes from Kodagu. This clearly shows that the traditional votes have not divided with the change in the constituency and the candidate.

In the last Assembly elections, Congress has polled 87,031 votes. In Lok Sabha election, Vishwanath has polled 82,045 votes from the district. He has polled 35,184 votes in Madikeri and 46,861 votes in Virajpet constituencies.

In the Assembly election, JD(S) had won 38,456 votes in Kodagu. In the Lok Sabha polls, Jeevijaya polled 42,402 votes from the district.

After Jeevijaya left Congress, all the leaders worked unitedly for the victory of the candidate. They did not give any scope for the division of votes. Jeevijaya polled more votes in Somwarpet and could not poll expected votes in Madikeri.

Vijayashankar did not get the expected votes in Mysore. Moreover, votes from Kuruba community was bagged by H Vishwanath which was a big blow to the Vijayashankar.
