The inflow to Koyna reservoir has increased owing to incessant rains in Maharashtra. As a precautionary measure, water is being released from Koyna even before the reservoir is full to the brim. While one lakh cusec water was released on Monday night, 40,000 cusec will be released on Tuesday night, sources said. Apart from this, the rain in Krishna catchment areas will further increase the inflow to Almatti reservoir. This is the first time that the authorities at Koyna reservoir have given prior intimation to their Karnataka counterparts. Earlier, Maharashtra used to release water without any information leading to extensive damage in Karnataka.

The water level stands at 519.3 meters as against the maximum of 519.6 meters in Almatti reservoir. The inflow of 1,25,000 cusec is being discharged to the river through 21 gates and power generation units.
