Big win for Cong-NC alliance

Last Updated 16 May 2009, 18:31 IST

All the three seats in Kashmir were won by NC, two of Jammu by the Congress and one in Ladakh by an independent.

Former chief minister and NC president Farooq Abdullah won from the Srinagar-Budgam Lok Sabha constituency defeating his nearest rival Moulvi Iftikhar Hussain of the PDP with a margin of over 30,000 votes.

Farooq’s sister  Khalida Shah, who was contesting as Awami National Conference (ANC) candidate from the same constituency, could obtain only 2,519 votes.

The main opposition party, PDP, received a major jolt as it could not win even a single seat from the whole State. Having won 22 seats in assembly polls last year, the PDP even lost the Anantnag- Pulwama seat in its stronghold of south Kashmir to the NC. It came as a big shock for the party. Dr Mehboob Beg of NC was declared elected from there.

The separatist-turned-mainstream leader Sajjad Gani Lone, who contested from the Baramulla- Kupwara Lok Sabha constituency, could not create magic and lost.

He stood at third position. The seat was won by NC’s Sharief-u-Din Shariq.

The Jammu-Poonch and Udhampur-Doda parliamentary constituencies went to the Congress. From Jammu-Poonch, Madan Lal Sharma was declared elected.

He defeated his nearest rival Leela Karan Sharma of the BJP. Lal Singh of Congress was declared elected from the Udhampur-Doda constituency.

The NC-Congress alliance also won the two assembly seats for which the by-elections were held. The National Conference  bagged the Sonawar Assembly constituency in Srinagar, while the Congress won the Bhaderwah seat.
