Andhra jail flooded, authorities forced to shift inmates

The jail in Repalle town of Guntur, one of the worst-hit districts, came under water following a breach in the Krishna river. Guntur is about 300 km from here.

As the water level rose alarmingly, the jail authorities shifted all 23 prisoners to a jail in Tenali town of the same district.

The railway station, the bus station, office of the fire brigade and Repalle church in the town were also submerged in the floods, billed as the worst in 100 years.

Repalle, which has a population of 60,000, is the latest town to be inundated by the floods, which devastated Kurnool and Mantralayam towns and wreaked havoc in Nandyal town and parts of Vijayawada city last week.

However, the overall flood situation in the state has come under control as the flood waters began receding in most of the affected areas.
