Maharashtra Police will drop charges against the two girls who were arrested for commenting on a social networking site last week over the shutdown following Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray's demise.

Talking to the media, Director General of Police Sanjeev Dayal said that no charge sheet will be filed in the case of arrest of two girls from Palghar. “There will be a closure report.”

Interestingly, the move by the state police comes in the wake of the Supreme Court taking note of the matter stating that it was considering  suo motu cognisance of recent incidents of arrest of people for offences under Information Technology Act, 2000.

The two 21-year-old collegians Shaheen Dhada and Renu Srinivasan were taken into custody on November 19 by Palghar rural police after a local Shiv Sena leader complained against the girls.
