Chief minister Sheila Dikshit condoled the passing away of former Prime Minister I K Gujral. She described Gujral as an outstanding statesman, who served in different capacities in the Union government. “His term as the Prime Minister was brief, but Gujral Sahab took significant decisions in the best interest of the nation,” said Dikshit.

He was an Urdu scholar and a staunch supporter of democratic values, whose contributions will always be remembered, she added.

Malhotra remembers

Leader of opposition in Delhi Assembly Vijay Kumar Malhotra said Gujral was not only a great leader but an able administrator with brilliant writing skills.

He said Gujral was a fine human being. Recalling his days with the late Prime Minister, Malhotra said he was fortunate to have worked with him on several parliamentary committees. “He was not only my leader but also a very close friend,” said Malhotra.

Gujral was admitted to Medanta Medicity with lung infection on November 19 and was on ventilator. A team of nine senior consultants led by Naresh Trehan kept a close watch on him.

But medicines did not help. On Tuesday, he fell unconscious and never gained consciousness.
