CBI had charged him with taking bribe

A suspended assistant commissioner of Delhi government’s food and supply department allegedly committed suicide by hanging at his daughter’s house in south-west Delhi’s Dwarka area on Saturday afternoon.

Dharamvir Sharma, 54, a resident of Laxmibai Nagar, was arrested by Central Bureau of Investigation in a bribery case in August.

According to police, a suicide note has been recovered which says he was under depression and made two suicide attempts ever since he was released on bail in October 26.

“Dharamvir’s daughter found him hanging from a ceiling fan at her flat in Evergreen Apartments in Dwarka sector-7 around 2 pm,” a senior police official said.

She made a call to the police control room after which victim’s body was taken for post-mortem.

“Initial probe has revealed that Dharamvir was under depression and had attempted suicide in the past. In his suicide note, he wrote that he was depressed over the ongoing CBI probe against him,” the official added.

Dharamvir and his assistant Bal Krishan were arrested in August red-handed by CBI for allegedly accepting bribe at their Vikas Sadan office in ITO for renewing a ration shop licence.

However, in the suicide note, Dharamvir alleged that the apex investigating agency falsely implicated him in the case.

“Whatever has happened to me is unfair. I attempted suicide in the past also but my family members saved me. Today, I got a chance to end my life at my daughter’s house.

I am feeling bad because I am taking the extreme step at my daughter’s house. I am the only person responsible for my death,” he wrote in the note.

Refuting victim’s allegation against the investigating agency, CBI spokesperson Dharini Mishra said the agency had conducted a fair probe.

“Action was taken after a complaint was received against Dharamvir alleging that he was demanding Rs 15,000 as bribe for the renewal of a ration shop’s licence,” Mishra said.
