Two men who had escaped from Mumbai Police custody have been arrested in north-west Delhi’s Jahangirpuri, police said on Thursday.

Sumit Narula, 25, and Gurcharan Singh, 36, both residents of Burari, had escaped during the wee hours of Tuesday. They were arrested in Mumbai in 2010 for involvement in over 25 robbery cases in Mumbai, Delhi and Haryana.

“Mumbai Police had brought the duo to Delhi on Monday for a hearing at Tis Hazari court. They managed to escape with a plan to vanish along with family members, but their plan was foiled,” said P Karunakaran, deputy commissioner of police (north west).

Karunakaran said police  launched a search and distributed dossiers at police stations. A special team then received a tip-off that the accused were hiding at Jahangirpuri.

On Wednesday, Mahendra Park police station’s head constable Jagmohan and constable Prahalad Singh were on patrol duty when they noticed Sumit and Gurcharan at Jahangirpuri bus stand.

They overpowered the fugitives, who tried to run away on seeing the policemen. Sumit and Gurcharan were arrested under section 41.1 (E) of the CrPC. Mumbai Police have been informed about the arrest.
