Farmer duped of Rs 20L

On pretext of providing property worth $12.5 million

A Maharashtra-based farmer was duped of Rs 20 lakh on the pretext of providing him the ownership rights of the property worth $12.5 million left behind by his relative in Spain, police said on Sunday.

Dattaray Hariba Ganage, who hails from Solapur district, was asked by the accused to come to the Capital to meet Spanish Ambassador Francisco Javier Elorza Cavengt.
He, however, approached Delhi Police after he found that he was cheated through Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the United Nations (UN).

Dattaray said the fraud began after he received a letter from a person who identified himself as Rio Elute in August 2011.

“The letter informed him that his relative Lue Ganage expired in Spain and property worth 12.5 million dollars could be claimed by him,” said a police officer.
Another man George Williams also kept on contacting Dattaray, and told him to deposit Rs 1.24 lakh in a bank account in March. He deposited the money.

“Thereafter George kept on asking Dattaray to deposit more amount and issued many letters claiming to have been issued by RBI and UN,” the officer added.

Dattaray deposited Rs 20 lakh till date. George told Dattaray to come to the capital to meet the Spanish Ambassador on December 26 to finalise the formalities.

“Dattaray and his family members came to Delhi, but were informed that the Spanish Ambassador would not be able to meet him due to security reasons,” the officer said.
“He was told that he will have to deposit Rs 85,000 to meet the ambassador.”

George also made Dattaray talk to a person claiming to be Spanish Ambassador, who advised him to deposit the money in two bank accounts of Sharad Jain and Dinesh Mishra. Dattaray got suspicious and visited offices of RBI and the UN. He was shocked to find out that all the letters were fake.

A senior police officer said Dattaray fell into the trap due to his ancestors migration to Europe.

“A case of cheating and criminal conspiracy was registered with crime branch police station on December 4. We have arrested an accused, but the entire gang is yet to be busted,” the officer said.
