Drunk driver injures 5 securitymen

Four Delhi Police personnel and a Delhi Home Guards official were injured when a drunk restro-bar manager rammed his car into a police picket near the Commonwealth Games (CWG) Village in east Delhi in the early hours of Thursday. The driver has been arrested.

According to police, Sunil Sharma, 27, was returning home from work when he lost control of his Chevrolet Aveo at the Hazrat Nizamuddin-Akshardham temple road around 1:40 am.
Sunil lives with his family at Vaishali, sector 1, in Ghaziabad and works as a manager with the ‘7 Degrees Brauhaus’ in Gurgaon, sector 53.

“A police team, comprising staff of the Pandav Nagar police station and a Delhi Home Guard personnel, was manning a picket near the CWG Village when the speeding car rammed into them,” a police official said.

Five members of the team were injured and three motorcycles were damaged. Sunil was immediately overpowered by other staff at the picket.

Head constables Surender Lal (48), and Manoj Kumar (38), constables Sheesh Pal (28) and Avnish (27) and Home Guard official Sahab Singh (45) were rushed to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital in a police control room vehicle.

“All of them except Avnish were discharged after first aid. Avnish is critical and was later shifted to Deepak Memorial Hospital in Preet Vihar,” the official said.

Sunil’s breath test at Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital revealed that he was driving under the influence of alcohol. “Alcohol level must not exceed 30 mg per 100 ml of blood, but Sunil’s test recorded 98.3 mg per 100 ml. He was subsequently arrested,” the official added.  A case under the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act has been lodged against Sunil with the Pandav Nagar police station.
