Laughter all the way

Comedy time

Humour can truly make one’s day. This was proved once again by a talented group of young stand-up comedians from ‘Evam Omnibus’ recently with their act ‘Battle of the SEXes’ at Alliance Francaise recently. The brilliant comic timing of Karthik Kumar, S Aravind, Rajiv, Amrutha and guest performer Bala Kumaran impressed the audience.

The crisp and rib-tickling performance made the audience laugh throughout the show.

Varied subjects, which are often the butt of jokes, were chosen. The topics ranged from women on roads, beauty parlours, Indian marriages, honeymoon, twins and the IT world.
Making Tamil accent their forte, the team members were not shy to flaunt the jokes being cracked on them when they speak in Hindi.

“Once I went to an alcohol store and in Hindi, asked them to give me two liquor bottles. I told him ‘mujhe ek bottle do uske saath aur ek bottle bhi do’. This ended up confusing the old chap. It takes a lot of practice for me to speak in Hindi,”  says Rajiv.

His description of fact versus fantasy in films was hilarious as he explained the entire concept of ‘first night’ as shown in the films. “It isn’t anything like what is shown in the films. Once you are married, you will accept the fact that you have to carry your wife’s hand bag when she is shopping. I went to a sari shop the other day, I met a friend who was carrying a child on his shoulders, another child in his arms plus his wife’s purse.

His wife, on the other hand, was shopping. We started talking and soon he pointed out that another married man was in the same situation except that his child was crying. Poor man! He forgot to bring glucose,” he adds.

Amrutha, a young stand-up comedian, created quite a buzz as she was the only woman on the stage.  “The age-old debate about women not having a sense of direction and not being able to  drive is actually correct. This is because it takes too much concentration to focus on the road when you are surrounded by so many mirrors. On top of it, we notice what other women are wearing, if there is a good looking man in the next car and if our boy friends are out there with someone else,” she says.

Natasha, who had come with her friends for the show, enjoyed every moment of it. “They are hilarious and I love their accent. The  Tamil folk music that they had used as fillers adds variety to the show,” she says.
