6 held for 'killing' elephant

Six people were arrested by a team of forest officers as they were trying to burn the carcass of a 20-year-old male elephant at a farm on the outskirts of Yaraganahalli village in the border area of the taluk on Thursday.

Two tusks of the elephant and two jeeps have been seized from the arrested who are identified as Mathew M George, Anthony Paul, Vithesh and Rope, all natives of Kerala, and Sunil and Bellegowda from Yaraganahalli.

It could not be confirmed if the elephant was electrocuted or if it was killed for its tusks by the suspects.

An investigation is being conducted. Officials of the Chamundeshwari Electrical Supply Company, who visited to the spot, said there are no signs of the animal being electrocuted. The suspects were trying to burn the carcass near the farm belonging to George.
