JD(S) ready to support UPA govt: Kumaraswamy

Last Updated 17 May 2009, 10:24 IST

"Congress has requested us for our support and to join the government. I said we will consider it," former chief minister and JD(S) state unit president H D Kumaraswamy said.
AICC general secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad, who is in-charge of Congress affairs in Karnataka, had a telephonic talk with Kumaraswamy on Saturday and sought the party support.
Kumaraswamy, who confirmed the development, said, "He (Azad) has also asked me to join the government and come to Delhi for discussions in this regard."

Kumaraswamy said he will leave for Delhi this evening.
"If Congress is keen to check the growth of BJP and communal forces and if it thinks that participation of JD(S) in the Union Government will help in this regard, we are ready to support," JD(S) Spokesman Y S V Datta said.
Soon after poll results were announced, Kumaraswamy on Saturday said that JD(S) has an open mind in extending support to Congress in government formation at the Centre.
Kumaraswamy last week had a hush-hush meeting with Congress president Sonia Gandhi, a development that embarrassed Third Front leaders.

Datta said Kumaraswamy would hold discussions with Third Front leaders and brief them about the political situation in Karnataka.
Deve Gowda, one of the architects of the Third Front, has cancelled his visit to Delhi today as he was indisposed.
Gowda, who will be turning 77 on Monday, has also cancelled his visit to Tirupati where he planned to offer worship at Venkateshwara Temple, a practice he had been following for many years on his birthday.
