Pak violates ceasefire in Kashmir yet again

Last Updated 06 January 2013, 19:36 IST

In the first ceasefire violation this year in Kashmir, Pakistani troops opened heavy mortar fire on Indian posts along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Uri sector of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Saturday night. Defence sources said Pakistani troops violated ceasefire by firing mortar shells towards Indian army posts in the Charunda area of Uri sector, 110 km from here.

“They (Pakistan troops) started firing mortar shells towards our posts at Churunda village in Uri sector around 3 am,” they said. “Some of the shells landed close to civilian habitation “but no damage was reported.”

Defence Public Relation officer (PRO), Northern Command, J&K, Lt Col Rajesh Kalia said Pakistan Army has been attempting to push infiltrators across the LoC, under cover of heavy firing and poor weather conditions.

“The Pakistan Army has also been resorting to sending terrorists across the LoC to plant mines on tracks in hinterland,” he said. On Sunday’s violation, Lt Col Kalia said the army retaliated against the Pakistani shelling briefly after which there has been silence from both sides.
