A man has been arrested by the police on the charges of sexually abusing his six-year-old daughter.

The police were alerted by the doctors of a private hospital where the minor was admitted for medical examination Sunday evening. The Jeevan Bima Nagar police have detained the man from his residence in Thimmareddy Colony.

Following the arrest of Kumar (36), his wife Savitha (all names changed) lodged a formal complaint with the police Monday morning, alleging sexual abuse and rape of her younger daughter Kanti by Kumar.

Kumar and Savitha, married for 11 years, hail from a small village near Madanapalli, Andhra Pradesh, and have two daughters – a 10-year-old and the 6-year-old victim. The family migrated to the City a few years ago. Kumar ran a laundry shop on a pushcart in Thimmareddy Colony. Kanti is studying in first standard and her elder sister is in Class V.

Savitha told Deccan Herald that on January 29, she was sleeping with her elder daughter on the cot, while Kanti was sleeping with her father on the floor. “Past midnight, I was woken up suddenly as Kanti screamed. I was shocked to spot blood stains on my daughter’s frock when she complained of pain.

The mother took her to a gynaecologist who said the girl might have been sexually abused or even raped and advised her to take the child to a bigger hospital.

Backtracks

However, Savitha panicked and backtracked, while her mother too advised her against going to the doctors or to the police. After four days of dillydallying, Savitha took the child to Manipal Hospital on Sunday. The doctors confirmed sexual abuse and alerted the police. Savitha also filed a complaint with the police.

Sources said during interrogation, Kumar confessed to sexually abusing the girl more than once and had warned her not to tell anything to her mother.

Kanti was admitted to Bowring Hospital for treatment and medical examination Monday afternoon. She was discharged on Tuesday and is doing fine, the mother said. Reports of the medical examination are awaited.
