Unani students on strike

Last Updated 07 February 2013, 20:43 IST

Around 100 postgraduate students of the National Institute of Unani Medicine (NIUM), Magadi Road are on an agitation since Wednesday demanding revoking of  suspension of a student.

The students, who are also resident doctors, allege that the management has taken up an issue that took place six months ago involving a quarrel between a librarian and the student. “The matter was resolved between the parties without the need for any intervention from the authorities,” said a student of the Institute.

Authorities, however, claim that the matter was not taken seriously as exams were on. Thereafter, a committee was constituted to look into the matter and a ‘symbolic’ suspension of the student was suggested.

“The symbolic suspension involved the student not attending classes for about six days. Even the librarian concerned was given a warning,” said Director (NIUM), Mansoor Ahmed Siddiqui.

Students, however, allege unwarranted and unprovoked harassment by the management on frivolous grounds.
“Some teachers have even threatened us of dire consequences,” said the student.
