Nagapura ward that falls under Mahalakshmi Layout Assembly constituency can probably provide object lesson to other wards of City on effective plastic waste management.

Around 500 kg of plastic generated from hundreds of households in Nagapura ward every day are segregated at a playground near Nandini Theatre by the pourakarmikas and later handed over to KK Plastic Waste Management Private Limited for processing. Once processed, the firm uses them while laying roads.

For each kg of plastic, KK Plastic pays Rs 6 to pourakarmikas along with additional incentive of Re 1. Besides plastic, the wet waste from homes is handed to agriculturists. Nagapura ward Corporator and former Deputy Mayor, S Harish, said: “We started this initiative eight months back and the response from people has been amazing. Due to this, not only our area is clean but even the 110 pourakarmikas working in our ward are getting benefitted.”

“Till date we have received about 20 tonne of plastic from Nagapura and has been used for laying roads at Jayanagar, Double Road, near Bangalore University, Mysore Road-Silk Board stretch among others,” said KK Plastic Waste Management Limited Director K Rasool Khan.

Harish said for effective plastic waste management, following 3 R’s are very necessary. “All companies and wards should try to recycle, reduce and reuse plastic.”

He also announced that shortly a bio-methanization plant would be installed with support from BBMP in the ward.
