In a shocking incident, an eight-year-old child was allegedly given electric shock and thrashed with boots by the cops who suspected that he had stolen some valuables from a marriage function in the state capital.

The Juvenile Justice Board on Wednesday ordered immediate release of the child, who was produced before it, after looking at his condition.

“The child could barely walk. There were blood stains on his ears and jacket,” said a member of his family.

According to his family members, police picked him from his house on Saturday after some people complained that he had stolen some valuables from the function’s venue.
“The cops kept him in the lock up throughout the night and tortured him. He kept shouting that he had not stolen anything but they continued thrashing him,” his father told the Board.

Police booked the boy for theft.

Child tortured

“I go to a nearby temple to have prasad daily. That day some people caught me and alleged that I had stolen their valuables. Later on, the cops took me to police station and tortured me throughout the night,” the child said.

The SHO of Krishnanagar police station Ram Sanehi Yadav, refuted the allegations, but admitted that the child was brought to the police station for questioning related to the theft case.

Yadav said those who had brought him to the police station had alleged that the boy and some others had taken away valuables from one of their vehicles parked near the wedding venue.

“The baratis (wedding guests) had also beaten the kid,” the SHO said.

District police chief R K Chaturvedi said the matter would be investigated and action taken against the police officers if they were found guilty.
