Cong bags 20 seats in Rajasthan

Last Updated 17 May 2009, 18:38 IST

Counting process was stopped in the constituency on Saturday after one of the electronic voting machines developed a snag. Meena was declared elected on Sunday after engineers from Bangalore retrieved the data from the faulty machine.

While the electoral tsunami washed away the lotus from the desert state, electing at least ten Congress candidates with a whopping margin of over one lakh votes, Namo Narayan Meena could record his victory only by a meager margin of 317 votes, the lowest margin of victory in all the 25 seats of Rajasthan.

Meena had to literally sweat it out against Kirori Bainsla who joined the BJP on the eve of Lok Sabha polls. The  Gurjar leader who led two prolonged agitations to seek tribal status for his community in Rajasthan had entered the poll fray to get justice for his people through “political voice”. With Bainsla’s defeat, the BJP, in a clear reversal of fortune has got stuck at four, which was Congress party’s score in the 2004 election.
