Last Updated 17 May 2009, 19:40 IST

Deshpande, addressing a press conference on Sunday, said that according to an assessment by the party Congress gained 37.71 pc of total votes polled in the State. In the previous election the total voters’ turnout in favour of the Congress was 36.82 pc.
Deshpande admitted that the party’s organisation was not strong at the grassroots and that resulted in poor performance. The party would soon revamp the organisation at block and district level. New faces would be given opportunity in the organisation, he said.
According to the Congress, the BJP stands first in the vote share chart. The ruling BJP gained 41.74 pc of the total votes polled, against 34.77 pc in the 2004 elections.
The JD(S) secured 13.67 pc of votes this time. In the 2004 elections the JD(S) had secured 20.45 pc of the total votes polled.
