Do not notify Cauvery award: K'taka team to PM

Last Updated 18 February 2013, 20:21 IST

Karnataka delegates led by Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar on Monday failed to get assurance from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the state’s demand to delay the proposed notification of the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.

With just two days left for the deadline set by the Supreme Court, they requested Singh not to notify the award.

If the Centre notified the award and set up Cauvery Management Board to monitor the water release to lower riparian state, Karnataka would suffer huge loss in sharing of Cauvery water, Shettar told Singh.

However, Union Law Minister Ashwini Kumar, who was present during the meeting, took a dig at Karnataka by saying that the state had taken contradictory stand on the notification earlier. While in the Supreme Court, the state had not objected for notification but now you opposing it, he told the delegates.

But sources said that the chief minister tried to convince him by explaining about the disadvantages to Karnataka from the proposed board.
