Last Updated 02 March 2013, 19:12 IST

Asaduddin Owaisi, the Member of Parliament from Hyderabad and president of All-India Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) was taken into custody by the Humnabad police on Saturday night reportedly for violation of election code of conduct.

Owaisi was taken into custody at the RTO checkpost on the National Highway 9, near Humnabad when he was coming from Basava Kalyan after attending a election campaign. The police have taken him to an undisclosed location for questioning.

According to sources, Owaisi had come to Bidar district to campaign for his party candidates contesting the urban local body elections. The police tried to prevent him from attending a campaign meeting at Basava Kalyan as the organisers did not have permission for holding the meeting.

Eyewitnesses told Deccan Herald that supporters of Owaisi argued with the police that there was nothing wrong in their leader participating in the meeting.
