A member of the Railway protection Force (RPF) beat up a passenger and pushed him on the tracks on Tuesday morning. The passenger latter succumbed to the deep head injury and died at a nearby hospital.

The incident happened at Behrampur Court Railway station where RPF constable Poritosh Biswas allegedly started beating Dilip Ghosh, a cloth merchant from Bangaon in South 24 Paprganas district, after Ghosh had a debate with Biswas over the identity of his wife Rama Ghosh.

According to reports, Dilip, on a pilgrimage to Tarapith with his wife, Rama, arrived in Behrampur Court station as his train from Ranaghat was late. He stayed at the station’s waiting room intending to board an early morning bus to Tarapith.

Eyewitnesses said Biswas came around 4 am and started questioning Ghosh couple suspecting that they were not married to each other. A scuffle broke out between the two men when Biswas punched Dilip’s face and started dragging him to the RPF police room at the end of the station.

“I was running after him (Biswas), requesting not to beat my husband, but he did not listen to me,” Rama said.

“In the end we hired a cycle-rickshaw and took him to hospital,” Rama added.
Sources in Behrampur Medical College and Hospital where Dilip was admitted said: “He had a deep wound at the back of his head. The profuse bleeding caused his death. Had he been brought earlier he would have survived.”

Poritosh Biswas was arrested later.
