Ruling Congress faced a barrage from the opposition on Tuesday over the alleged windfall gains through shady land deals by Robert Vadra –son-in-law of party President Sonia Gandhi— in Rajasthan in connivance with the state government.

Demanding a “court monitored” probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on the issue, the BJP alleged that Vadra purchased large tracks of land in Bikaner in the name of investment at a site marked for setting up solar plants and made heavy profits by selling some of them to various companies later.

For purchasing the land, Vadra opened 12 new companies “overnight” and offered the power of attorney to Mahesh Nagar, brother of Lalit Nagar, a Congress leader in Haryana. The opposition alleged that land was bought for as low as Rs 20,000- Rs 30,000 per bigha.

They said Rajasthan government colluded with Vadra to facilitate shady land deals in Bikaner. To kick-start the Jawaharlal Nehru Solar Mission, Rajasthan government issued 782 licences to the companies for extracting solar energy in Bikaner.
