“The reasons are simple. People have been facing a lot of trouble due to incomplete road works after civic agencies dig them up and leave. Since it is the responsibility of the agency that digs up the road for their work, we expect them to re-lay the road. To speed up the road repair works we will be putting up the list of contractors for other civic agencies,” said a BBMP official.

Accordingly, the Palike will have a list of 1,992 contractors under four categories uploaded in the coming week on www.bbmp.gov.in

The BBMP has decided to publish the list of contractors within a fortnight and people can contact them to get the roads repaired at the earliest.

Sources added that the junior engineers or the assistant engineers had the responsibility of repairing the roads earlier. But, since the BBMP was not equipped with asphalt mixing plant, it has decided to give it to contractors or agencies who have the equipment to mix asphalt.
The various civic agencies in the city can now directly ask the contractors, if interested in a particular work, to bid for asphalting works without going through the BBMP and delaying the re-laying of roads.

The four categories of contractors have been divided according to their solvency with the BBMP. Grade I (Rs 50 lakh), Grade I B (Rs 30 lakh), Grade II (Rs 10 lakh), Grade III (Rs 3 lakh) and Grade IV (Rs 25,000). “The list of contractors will be the same, but the asphalting works are generally carried out by Grade I and II,” the official added.
