Kannada forum opposes encroachment

Members of a pro-Kannada organisation warned of staging a hunger strike in front of the deputy commissioner’s office in Hassan, if the encroachment of a government school was not cleared within the next 10 days.

Addressing a press meet in Hassan on Friday, district unit leader of the organisation Mahesh alleged that an influential person had encroached upon the government higher primary school in Hirisave.

The members alleged the place that was donated to the school in 1954 has been illegally acquired by H R Manjunath, who had constructed shops in the said land.

Though the affected parties have been opposing the same for the last two years, no steps had been taken to clear the encroachment. On the contrary, complaints had been lodged against those who were fighting for the cause, they complained.

One of the tahsildars had assured to take steps to clear the encroachment -- he had even issued a notice to Manjunath on May 21, 2012 stating that if the encroachment was not cleared within the next 15 days, authorities concerned would raze down the buildings. A year had gone by, but no action had been taken.

Mahesh also alleged the intervention of JD(S) leader H D Revanna in the issue, who he said was supporting Manjunath.

“No official is taking any action over the issue because of this. The tahsildar who was involved in the issue too has been transferred,” he alleged.
