At last, BJP suspends 2 rebel MPs

The BJP on Monday suspended Lok Sabha members B Y Raghavendra and Shivakumar Udasi from the party for “anti-party activities” as they have identified themselves with former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa’s Karnataka Janata Party (KJP).

The State unit of the BJP had been pushing for action against the duo. Although they have been suspended from the membership of the BJP Parliamentary Party, they, however, will continue as unattached members in the Lok Sabha. Raghavendra, son of Yeddyurappa, and Shivakumar Udasi, son of former minister C M Udasi, are MPs from Shimoga and Haveri respectively.

"It has been brought to the notice of the BJP Parliament Party by the president of the State BJP that you are actively campaigning against the party by addressing the gatherings of KJP workers and calling upon them to defeat the BJP in the Assembly elections. In spite of repeated requests, you have not stopped the campaign against the BJP. This is a clear violation of the party discipline and tantamount to anti-party activity," said Ramesh Bais, chief whip of the BJP, in a letter to the two MPs.

‘No regrets’

Reacting to the suspension, Raghavendra said he has no regrets for the action against him.

Raghavendra told Deccan Herald: “I am keen to reply to the notice which will be issued to me soon. I have no regrets in this regard as I have committed no sin. In fact, the suspension has given me freedom. It has helped me to come out of the  ‘garbhagudi samskruti.’ Now, I am a relieved man. Though I was with the BJP technically, mentally I was with the KJP. I am confident that after the announcement of the Assembly poll results, BJP leaders will regret for suspending me from the party.”

The other MP, Udasi, said he had not indulged in anti-party activities. “Instead, the party has provoked me to take up such activities by suspending me from the BJP. If the leadership has any evidence on it, they could have expelled me from the party instead of suspending. The BJP leadership, which lacks clarity, is creating confusion among others by suspending us,” he observed.
