The body of a woman allegedly killed by her husband and buried in a pit at Palghar was exhumed for probe in the case, police said today.

Doubting his wife's fidelity, one G S Sahani allegedly strangled his wife on March 31 this year near their home at Satpati in Palghar taluka of Thane district, assistant police inspector A J Sindhkar said.

Sahani then dug up a pit close to his house and buried his wife's body in it.

Later, when the woman's parents couldn't contact her and asked about her whereabouts, Sahani told them that she had been trampled to death by cattle. He then left for UP with his in-laws.

Meanwhile, the Satpati police received an anonymous phone call about the murder and located the pit where the woman's body had been buried.

A team of officials then went to UP for questioning Sahani. They brought him back and after exhuming the body on Wednesday for forensic examination, Sahani was arrested yesterday.

The accused has been booked under sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender) of the IPC, police said adding that further investigation was on.
