All of 21 and Ambi Subramaniam, son of veteran violinist L Subramaniam, enthralled the audience at Chowdiah Memorial Hall with his solo Carnatic violin recital recently.

Organised by ‘Bhoomija’, the concert gave many an opportunity to listen to the talented violinist.

Nothing short of a professional on stage, Ambi was accompanied by V V Ramana Murthy on the mridangam, T Radhakrishnan on the ghatam and G Sathya Sai on the morsing. Ambi opened the show with a varnam, in raga basanta set to adi tala. It was a unique piece and the performance got better and better as he increased the pace of his recital along with each accompaniment.

His next piece was a Ganapati Charana, composed by his father. Perhaps the biggest boost for the young artiste was the presence of his father at the venue, who was watching his son perform. Immensely confident on stage, he was in fact enjoying himself and did not forget to show his gratitude to the audience as and when he was applauded.

The recital had short, crisp pieces which were full of variations and innovations. His next piece was shripathe in raga Nagaswarali. In this recital, Ambi played without any of the accompaniments. It was here that the audience realised his true potential.

Poised and focussed, he handled his solo recital with ease. The concluding piece started after an hour-long break, after which he showcased different types of ragas. The audience was full of praises for him.

Anakha, who was present at the show, felt that he was one of the most humble young talents that she had seen performing.

“The fact that he is so talented at this age and yet so humble, really makes me respect him. The recital today was beautiful. He put his soul into it and he performed each piece with dedication,” she adds. Kumar, a member of the audience, was mesmerised by the performance of the artiste and could not stop raving about it.

“I liked the way the entire performance was structured. The opening piece was very unique and he played it effortlessly. I have heard that he plays Western classical as well. But when he is playing Carnatic, he does absolute justice to it. The biggest surprise was to see his father and sister turn up at the show. The evening could not have been better,” he adds.
