'Ballot more powerful than bullet'

Last Updated 17 April 2013, 21:36 IST

More than 400 students stretched out their hands and solemnly pledged that they shall exercise their voting right ethically at St Agnes College on Wednesday.

The novel initiative was introduced by Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation Plan (SVEEP), with an aim to motivate youth and hence make them understand their responsibilities.

Addressing the students, Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat CEO and DK SVEEP Chairman Dr K N Vijayprakash insisted that each student who have enrolled to vote should verify if his/her name is included in the voters list. One can also do this online. If anyone comes to know about unethical practices or have grievances can call 1077. "Be a part of this sacred democratic process," he requested. Commissioner of Police Manish Karbikar told students that they have to be decision makers. "No one can force you to vote for a particular candidate as it shall be an offence. You have the right to choose your leader," he said.

St Agnes College Principal Rev Sr Prem D'Souza told students to be responsible citizens. "Ballot is more powerful than the bullet," she said. A mime video produced by SVEEP was played on the occasion.
