Mayookha, Siddant sparkle

ONGC win team championship

Siddant Thingalaya and Mayookha Johny claimed double crowns as the 17th Federation Cup athletics championships ended in a blaze of glory for ONGC at the National Institute of Sports here on Friday.

Siddant, who had won the 100M gold on day two, triumphed in his main event, the 110M hurdles, on the concluding day though he missed the World Championships qualification mark. The ONGC athlete clocked 13.84 seconds against the ‘B’ standard of 13.50 seconds. Siddant had set his best of 13.65 seconds at Brussels last year.

Mayookha, the long jump champion, added the triple jump gold to her kitty with an effort of 13.46 metres. The ONGC athlete, who holds the national record of 14.11 metres, needed to jump 14.20 metres to attain the World Championships norm.

Olympians Om Prakash Singh and Krishna Poonia too couldn’t reach the grade though they won the gold comfortably in their respective events. Om Prakash topped the men’s shot put with an effort 18.91 metres while Krishna claimed the women’s discus title with a throw of 57.25 metres.

ONGC won the team championships with a tally of 177 points, finishing ahead of Kerala (113) and Tamil Nadu (78).

Triple jumper Arpinder Singh and quartermiler M R Poovamma were named the best athletes.
