Girls outshine boys in PUC, SSLC

Registering a pass percentage of 59.36, the results for II PU exams saw an upswing as this is one of the highest percentages in the last decade.

Announcing the results on Monday, the Department of Pre University Education revealed that ten years ago, the pass percentage was at 45.19 per cent.

Out of the 6,11,569 students who appeared for the exam, 3,63,057 students have cleared it. Students from the rural regions in the State have outshone their urban peers: 61.21 per cent of students of rural areas have cleared the exam compared with 58.79 per cent in urban regions. Also, girls in the State have excelled with 66.51 per cent of them having cleared the exam. The pass per cent of boys across the State is 52.72 per cent. In all, more than 50 per cent of students who took the II PUC exam have passed with First Class marks. About six per cent of these have secured distinction.

Addressing a press conference on Monday, Secretary, Department of Primary and Secondary Education, G Kumar Naik said “Udupi is in the top position with 92.72 per cent results, Mangalore is next with 91.76 per cent results. Karwar (82.97 per cent), Kodagu (80.83 per cent) and Chikmagalur (78.02 per cent) take the next three positions. Last year too, the same districts, with a slight alteration in numbers, figured in the top five. Yadgir (46.02 per cent), Bijapur (51.54 per cent) and Gulbarga (54.79 per cent) figure among the last three,” he said. Naik also confirmed that the grace marks of nine in mathematics had been awarded to students, in accordance with the orders of the High Court.

Bangalore South stood in ninth position with 74.84 per cent and Bangalore North occupied the tenth position with 74.63 per cent. Bangalore rural stood at eleventh position with 73.11 per cent.

Akshay Kamath from Mangalore’s Canara College has secured 594 marks out of 600, summing up to 99 per cent. He has secured 100 each in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Electronics and Sanskrit and has got 94 in English. “I am on cloud nine.

I have worked hard for the past two years and I believe that this feat is a gift for my hard work. I want to be an engineer. I am grateful to my parents and teachers. I used to study 14 hours a day. I had stopped watching TV and using mobile phone,” an elated Akshay told Deccan Herald.

In the Commerce stream, Suraj Hegde from Alva’s College in Moodibidri has secured 98.8 per cent (593 out of 600). His position is shared with Aishwarya A N, a commerce student from Bangalore. Aishwarya has secured 100 in Business Studies, Accountancy, Statistics and Sanskrit. She has achieved 99 in Basic Mathematics and 94 in English.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Suraj Hegde said he owed his success to his parents and teachers who motivated him to become the topper though he was not confident of the same. “I never believed in studying continuously for hours, but used to study for short time with complete concentration. My ambition is to become a chartered accountant and I have already started my preparations,” he said.

Pradeepa Garebala from Bagalkot has topped the Arts stream with 574 marks (95.67 per cent).

The DPUE has made a provision for issuing photo copy of answer scripts and for revaluation and retotalling. Applications also will be made available in all PU colleges. The applications will be available in Bangalore-One and Karnataka-One centres on paying the prescribed fee. Students may also download it from www.pue.kar.nic.in.

Applications have to be sent to the ‘Deputy Director (Exam), Department of PU Education, 18 Cross, Malleswaram, Bangalore.’ The last date for submitting applications for photocopy of answer scripts is May 13, 2013 and the fee is Rs 420.

Applications for revaluation have to be given in by May 20 (Rs 1,050 for one subject). Forms for retotalling, too, have to be sent before May 20 by paying Rs 280 per subject.

The supplementary examination for II PUC will be held from July 3 to July 12.
