The City traffic police have suspended D G Ratnakara, Inspector of Police, attached to Ashoknagar traffic police station, for dereliction of duty in connection with the hit-and-run accident on Sunday, which killed one and injured two others.

The police arrested Rajesh, son of a realtor, after they established that he was driving the Audi car involved in the hit-and-run case. Additional Commissioner (Traffic & Security) M A Saleem said that following a departmental inquiry, the officer was found to have not followed instructions of higher officials.

Even after the defence lawyer contacted the police,  who found the vehicle documents and two mobile phones in the car, the inspector did not trace the owner and driver of the vehicle. Saleem denied any mala fide intention on the part of the officer, but stated that it was dereliction of duty.

The police were unable to establish whether the driver was drunk during the accident due to delay in nabbing him. “This could change the course of the case and its investigation,” Saleem said.

Meanwhile, the II Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate judge remanded Rajesh Reddy in judicial custody for 15 days. He was produced by the Ashoknagar police.
