'Use power to help people'

Last Updated 13 June 2013, 20:38 IST

Power is a weapon. People's representatives should use this weapon for the benefit of the people, advised former Education Minister B A Mohideen.

He was delivering the keynote address at a felicitation for MLAs and Corporators who were elected in the recent elections, organised by Akhila Bharatha Beary Parishat at Town Hall here on Thursday.

Being elected is not ultimate. The testing time for leaders has now begun. People will watch every move of their representative. In case, the leader fails to do his duty, then the people will retaliate, he warned.

He advised the leaders to be transparent and become role models. “Ensure that your people enjoy the fruits of democracy,” he said.

Islam stands on a strong foundation of justice and truth. A person who can withstand temptations of corruption is a true Muslim, he said.

Accepting the felicitation, Mangalore South MLA J R Lobo said, “As an elected leader, my responsibility has increased. The love and support shown by the public, inspires me to work more earnestly”.

He said that India is known for its unity among all diversities. Hence, people of all communities should uphold this unique aspect of the country, he stressed.

Kanachur Academy of General Education (Deralakatte) Chairman Kanachur Monu said that the Beary community has been built with the hard work of the ancestors. The community needs further development. Education, social development will help the community to flourish, Kanachur Monu said.

MLA Mohiudeen Bawa was also felicitated.

As many as nine corporators and 14 members of Ullal Town Municipal were felicitated on the occasion.

A Beary cultural fiesta, 'Asar Ro Yese' and Beary folk singing, 'Sanjeya Raga' was held after the formal programme.
