Last Updated 15 June 2013, 17:15 IST

MLA Y S V Datta has said that the government should take measures to purchase quality copra from the farmers. The government has announced support price and opened purchasing centre to purchase copra from the farmers.

Speaking after inaugurating copra purchasing centre at Kadur APMC premises, he said the Governor’s address at the joint session had stressed on fixing scientific price for horticulture crops. “We had sought support price of Rs 2,250 for copra.

However, the government has announced only Rs 1,000. With continuos drought, quality of copra will not match the expectation of National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED). The government should impress upon the Centre to direct NAFED officers not to classify copra based on its weight, instead purchase quality copra.”

“I will meet horticulture minister, to impress upon him to increase financial assistance to copra. There is a need to open another copra purchasing centre at Panchanahalli,” he said.
“I have a responsibility to implement Kadur-Birur drinking water project. The government has constituted a task force under the leadership of the MLA. I will convene a meeting of the ZP and TP members from the region to discuss the project,” Datta added/
He also disbursed cheque of Rs one lakh to the family of Thimmappa who died following snake bite.

Centre officer Venkate Gowda said “we can purchase maximum of 10 qunital copra from a farmer. The farmers should produce title deeds for purchase.” APMC president Lakshmana Naik presided.
