Last Updated 23 June 2013, 21:31 IST

A homemaker allegedly committed suicide at her house in Yeshwantpur police limits on Saturday.

The deceased has been identified as Kumari, 32, a resident of First Main Road in Yeshwantpur. She had married Umesh, a roadside food vendor, 12 years ago. The couple had two sons, aged eight and 10.

According to the police, the couple were not on good terms as Umesh had taken to drinking heavily. “He allegedly harassed Kumari physically and mentally, leading her to take her life as she could no longer bear the torture,” police said.

Police added that Kumari had locked herself at home after Umesh went outside on Saturday, and while her sons were in school.

She hanged herself from a ceiling fan and her death was discovered by relatives, who lived in the same area. “There was no response when the relatives knocked on the door. They broke the door open and found the body,” police said.

They rushed Kumari to a nearby hospital where doctors declared her dead on arrival. A postmortem was conducted at M S Ramaiah Hospital.

Umesh attacked

According to police, angry relatives attacked Umesh afterwards, resulting in his hospitalisation. “He has now fled the hospital fearing for his life,” police said.

Umesh has been booked under Section 306 (abetment of to commit suicide) and Section 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) of the Indian Penal Code. A search has been launched to nab him.
