The Inspector General of Police (Western range) C H Prathap Reddy on Monday said the police had prepared a sketch of one of the suspects in the gang-rape of a MBBS student in Manipal, based on the details provided by the victim.

Speaking to the media persons here, Reddy said the sketch has been circulated among public and also members of autorickshaw drivers’ unions.

According to the description given by the victim, one of the rapists is of thin build with dark complexion. He has curly hairs and sports a French beard. The victim is slowly recollecting the incident and providing information to the police team, which is in touch with her through doctors and counsellors, he added.

Stating that the investigation is moving in the right way, the IGP said the police have obtained the CCTV footage from private establishments from the area where the girl was abducted.

The footages show hazy images of the autorickshaw in which the medico was taken away on the fateful night. Reddy said he has seen the footages and steps have been taken to enhance the image quality.

“There are nearly 10,000 autorickshaws. We are segregating the autos to zero in on the suspect vehicle. The department has shortlisted lots of technical inputs. The technical experts are working on them,” he added.

He said the girl was dropped near her hostel by one of the suspects after the other two suspects got down midway. She was alone in rear seat on her way back to hostel.
They spoke to the victim in Hindi. She told the police that the attackers were speaking a local language which had resemblance to Kannada, but not Kannada.

The IGP said the victim has a good knowledge of Kannada. The suspects could have spoken Beary, Tulu or Konkani.

Reddy said the victim is recuperating and is being counselled.  The police have interrogated 16-17 persons so far.

If the public have any clues about the suspects, they can inform Manipal Circle inspector Sadananda Thippannanavar on 94808 05448, or Udupi special cell—97425 12100, 0820 2521 257 or e-mail to spudupi@ksp.gov.in

The identity of the informer will be kept in secret, the IGP said.

Members of the ABVP, the CPM and the BJP Mahila Morcha staged protests urging the police to arrest the culprits at the earliest. The ABVP had called for college bandh in Udupi district.
